Can I Receive Incontinence Products Through South Carolina Medicaid?

Under South Carolina Medicaid, individuals may qualify to receive a combination of the following:

  • Adult Pull-Ups (Pull-Ons / Protective Underwear),
  • Adult Briefs (Adult Diapers),
  • Disposable Underpads,
  • Bladder Control Pads,
  • Wipes, And
  • Gloves.

To be approved for incontinence supplies under South Carolina’s Medicaid program, you must have the following items:

  • Documented proof within the last six months that the items are considered medically necessary by a physician.
  • Must be enrolled in a South Carolina Medicaid plan.
  • Must have a qualifying medical need, such as autism, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Down syndrome, etc.
  • Pre-approval of incontinence supplies from your provider (prior authorization).
  • The estimated amount of supplies needed per day.
  • The medical reason for needing supplies (certificate of medical necessity).

What Is South Carolina Medicaid?

Healthy Connections is South Carolina’s Medicaid program. It is a medical assistance program that helps pay some or all medical bills for many people who cannot afford medical care. The program also assists individuals over 65 or who have a disability with the costs of nursing facility care and other medical expenses. An applicant’s income and assets usually determine eligibility. South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) administers Health Connections and pays medical bills with state and federal tax money.

To be eligible for South Carolina Medicaid, you must be:

  • A resident of the state of South Carolina,
  • A U.S. national, citizen, permanent resident, or legal alien, in need of health care/insurance assistance,
  • And are individuals with meager incomes or low incomes.

You must also be one of the following:

  • Pregnant, or
  • Be responsible for a child 18 years of age or younger, or
  • Blind, or
  • Have a disability or a family member in your household with a disability, or
  • Be 65 years of age or older.

Healthy Connections can cover many groups of people. Several factors, including age, determine eligibility; whether you are pregnant, have a disability; income and assets; and whether you are a U.S. citizen or a qualified alien.
